EFM – Radio Partner for Earth Hour Sri Lanka supports the cause

Every year, E FM has carried a message to its family of listeners ranging from many back grounds and lifestyles. A message prompting change to battle global warming and climate change by being a part of Earth Hour and represent a global cause.

E FM is proud to have partnered Earth Hour throughout the years and together have carried this important message to the masses of Sri Lanka. And like wise, this year too, E FM have already started its campaign to educate its listeners the evils of over consumption and climate change.

During its comprehensive on air campaign, E FM listeners are also been encouraged to switch off their non essentials lights and electronic appliances for a period of one hour and join the global initiative, Earth Hour. This year, with the support of Earth Hour Sri Lanka, E FM listeners will also have the opportunity to win authentic Earth Hour T-Shirts.

Mount Lavinia Hotel to observe Earth Hour 2013

As the largest environmental event in history, Earth Hour asked people and communities around the world to switch off their lights for one hour as a silent but powerful statement about the effects of human-accelerated climate change. In 2011, more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour, and thousands of individuals took advantage of the opportunity to go “Beyond The Hour” to change their energy consumption habits for good. And even better the global digital footprint was in excess of 91 million and it indeed mobilized millions of people to go beyond. Yes amidst all was MLH who have been active in their green initiatives and have taken the Earth Hour celebrations very seriously and has made the idea of it more than just a trend.

“WE at MLH have celebrated it three years running and the only way Earth Hour can make a real difference is to recognize and celebrate the fact that this is the greatest time to be alive, and to illuminate global climate change,” stated Mr Bazeer Cassim, Group General Manager MLH. “This year we will not only go beyond the hour but will empower our community that we work closely with that they are making a difference.

Hilton Colombo to observe Earth Hour 2013

Hilton Colombo plans to mark Earth Hour 2013 from 8:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 23, 2013 as people and organizations around the world turn off their lights in support of action on global climate change. Hilton Colombo along with 3,000 hotels that are part of the Hilton Worldwide portfolio of brands are expected to take part in the event that will mobilize more than one billion people worldwide.

Keeping in line with the Earth Hour theme of 60+, Spices, Spoons and the Thorana Lounge will be switching off their lighting for one hour, allowing diners to enjoy a candlelit dinner. Spices restaurant will be serving an authentic Hydrabadi themed buffet that is created by the hotel’s very own Indian Chef Sandeep Kumar. Guests can also enjoy the Earth Hour Jazz unplugged at the hotel’s exquisite Thorana Lounge and bar.

The hotel will also observe Earth Hour by switching off all non-essential lights including laundry machines, boilers, swimming pool pumps, the pond, the tennis court lights, concessionaire shop lights, and building lights. Moreover the hotel will shut down one elevator and the back corridor lights will be reduced by 50% while all the floor corridors will be kept on emergency lighting for one hour. The well known Hilton neon logo will also be switched off as a symbolic gesture to further demonstrate

Expo Rail supports Earth Hour 2013 for the second consecutive year

Expo Rail which has re-defined train travel in Sri Lanka has committed to go beyond the hour for the second consecutive year. Speaking to Expo Rail officials they said this how they will be supporting the cause to go beyond the hour;

• At Expo Rail the Month of March have been delectated for “Earth Hour & Climate Change”
• Expo Rail will be playing a video on climate change with the official 2013 Earth Hour video for every sector they operate daily including their office premises.
• Publicity will be given in Expo Rail FB page thus creating awareness to over 8000+ fans
• The cabin crew members will be given a badge which will convey a strong message on Earth Hour
• The website will carry the Earth Hour logo which would give access to the Earth Hour SL sign up page

The main reason behind why they decided to support Earth Hour – 2013 and to go beyond the hour is because Expo Rail is in the business of Train Travel which has a considerable amount of Eco Benefits. For instance;

• Results so far indicate that trains are almost always less damaging to the environment than planes and cars.
• A train uses up to 70% less energy and causes up to 85% less air pollution when compared to a jet aircraft.
• Trains use 17 times less fuel to travel the same distance compared to an aircraft and 5 times less fuel than a car per passenger km.
• So to conclude if a party of 30 travels with Expo Rail, you will be using 30 times less fuel than if you hired 6 taxis

Earth Hour Global Founder in Sri Lanka to Launch Local Campaign For 2013

7 January 2013, Colombo: Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour™, has called on business leaders and media institutions to do their part to go beyond the hour for our planet, as he launched the Earth Hour 2013 campaign for Sri Lanka today (7th January 2013). Earth Hour will be observed globally on Saturday, 23 March 2013 at 8:30PM.

Speaking in front an audience of government, business and media leaders at the Lakshman Kadirgarmar Institute, Mr. Ridley spoke on how Earth Hour has become a symbol for action on climate change and sustainability, touching every pillar of the community to connect and show their desire for a sustainable planet.
